¡¡¡¡Halloween£¨ÍòÊ¥½Ú£© was called Samhain by the Irish. Samhain took place on October 31 through to November 1. During this period£¨Ê±ÆÚ£©, it was believed that the boundaries£¨·Ö½çÏߣ© between our world and the world of the dead were weakened£¨¼õÉÙ£©, allowing spirits£¨Áé»ê£© of the recently dead to cross over£¨¿ç¹ý£© and possess£¨ÓµÓУ© the living.

¡¡¡¡To celebrate the festival, the Irish would dress up in bizarre£¨ÆæÒìµÄ£© costumes and parade£¨ÓÎÐУ© through their villages£¬causing destruction£¨ÆÆ»µ£© and saying "Trick-or-Treat", in-groups scare£¨ÏÅ»££© off any recently departed£¨ÍùÎôµÄ£© souls who might be prowling£¨ËÄ´¦Ñ°ÃÙ£© for bodies to inhabit£¨¾ÓסÓÚ£©. Irish immigrants brought several customs with them, including one of the symbols£¨±êÖ¾£© most commonly associated with Halloween ¡ª¡ª the "Jack Lantern". £¨µÆÁý£©

¡¡¡¡According to Irish folklore£¨´«Ëµ£©, there once lived a man named Jack who was known for being a drunk and a prankster£¨°®¶ñ×÷¾çµÄÈË£©. One night Jack tricked£¨ºåÆ­£© the devils£¨Ä§¹í£© into climbing a tree, and quickly carved£¨¿Ì£© an image of a cross£¨Ê®×ּܣ© on the trunk£¨Ê÷¸É£©, trapping£¨×½×¡£© the devil. Jack then made him promise that, in exchange for letting him out of the tree, the Devil would never tempt£¨ÒýÓÕ£© him to sin again. He reluctantly£¨ÃãÇ¿µØ£© agreed, but was able to exact his revenge upon£¨±¨³ð£© Jack's death. Because of his mischievous£¨µ÷ƤµÄ£© ways in life, Jack was barred£¨±»¶ÂÈûµÄ£© from entering heaven and because of his earlier trick, he was also barred from hell. So he was doomed£¨×¢¶¨£© to wander the earth until the end of time, with only a "Jack Lanterns" to warm him.
